About Compounding

Compounding is the preparation of a customized medication used to solve a patient’s health issue by meeting his or her specific prescription needs. Compounding pharmacists work together with prescribers and their patients to develop the most appropriate therapy for each patient based on their health history, lifestyle, habits, and individual preferences.

As a member of Professional Compounding Centers of America, Wall’s Health Mart Pharmacy can provide customized prescription options to meet our patients’ unique needs. Our compounding laboratory contains specialized equipment not found in ordinary pharmacies. Our compounding pharmacists must undergo extensive training in modern compounding techniques and must regularly attend continuing educations seminars in order to do what they do.

Compounding allows a pharmacist to customize medications into a variety of different dosage forms, strengths, and flavors. Patients who have difficulty swallowing may prefer lozenges or chewable items.

We can compound a variety of different dosage forms, such as:

When a patient has a problem that does not respond to commercially available medications, or if side effects are unacceptable, our compounding professionals can help. Countless therapeutic possibilities exist when each medication can be customized to meet the needs of a specific patient, and patients and prescribers are not limited to commercially available preparation. We may be able to solve a patient’s problem by using pure pharmaceutical grade chemicals to compound the needed medication(s) in the best strength and dosage form for a specific patient. For example, research shows that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which are commonly used to treat arthritis and other painful conditions, are effective and have fewer side effects when they are properly formulated as a transdermal gel and applied topically directly to the affected area as opposed to oral administration.

Medication customization isn’t limited to human patients however… in addition to providing for all our human patients’ needs for health and medicine, we also cater to our critter companions! We offer solutions to problems by compounding specialized medications which meet the unique needs of each animal whether it be pets, exotic animals, horses or zoo animals.

Administering medication to an animal is not always easy or simple. To alleviate this, we prepare medications in easy-to-give flavored dosage forms that animals love. Flavors we’ve done so far include tuna for cats, liver for dogs, and banana or tutti fruit for exotic animals. You name it, we can compound it!

Commercial animal medications may only be available in a certain size, strength, or dosage type that is incompatible for. For example, a tablet may be too large to give to a cat, but an excessive amount of that same tablet may be needed for a proper dose for a horse. We can create a customized preparation which contains the most appropriate dosage and dosage forms for a specific animal, which means medicine is much easier to administer and is often more economical. This can include medicated chewable “treats”, liquid concentrates, ear drops, and dusting powders, among other options. The active ingredients can usually be administered by various routes (oral, transdermal, optic, suppositories etc.)
